Photo taken November 25, 2012 at 1:15 pm. This building is the Columbia Russ Berrie Medical Science Pavilion on St Nicholas Avenue and 168th Street. It is an academic research building. It is also home to Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center for research and treatment of diabetes, Genome Center for the study of biology and medicine practice, and Cancer Research.
Architect: Davis Brody and Associates
Engineer: Jaros Baum & Bolles
Height: 122.94 ft

I chose this building because its design was unique from the other buildings I saw.

HW Assignment 1 - Photo
Photos taken 11/24/12 on my way home from a team meeting at my school. This is the criminal court building in Kew Gardens on Queens blvd.
Architect: Alfred Easton Poor & William Gehron
Built:1956-1961
Cost: $21 million dollars
Consists of the court, house of detention, offices of district attorney, offices of departments of probation and correction, the criminal term of the Supreme Court.
The first photo shows the front entrance to the courthouse. The second photo shows the back which consists of the court and the prison. The third photo shows the right side of the courthouse which consists of glass and shows the outer area of the inner courts on three floors. The fourth shows an artistic piece off to the left side which moves with the wind.
I think this building is cool because of the way it's designed, especially the right side of it with the glass front. The building looks much more amazing on the inside because the entrance has a mural and the courts extend under the ground to the top floor where you can look out of the glass and onto the Van Wyck Exp.

Homework Assignment 1 - Photo Post
Photo taken 4:15 pm November 16, 2012 with an iPhone 4 from the rooftop of 1 Centre Street, aka the Municipal Building. Taken while verifying the location of mechanical units atop 1 Centre Street. The building in the foreground is United States Courthouse at 38 Centre Street. I'll get more info on the architect later. The Empire State Building is in the background. I picked this shot because it was the most recent architectural photo I've taken.
Happy Holiday
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
to each of you and your families.

Homework Assignment #1
Post an interesting architectural or engineering related image(s) to the Team 8 Blog before our next Team meeting. Be sure to include as much background data as possible such as location, date, architect or engineer name, what is the intend use and/or why do think it's cool..
Second Hands on Activity - Survey/Blueprint Notation/Measuring
We had a much better turn out at our second meeting. Team 8 was broken up into six groups. Each group was handed a tape measure and a set of construction drawings that consisted of a Floor Plan, Reflected Ceiling Plan, and two sheets of Interior Elevations. Each team then visually surveyed a classroom space and took critical dimensions of items such as the distances between walls, columns, window and door sizes, mechanical supply louvers, ceiling heights and structural columns. In addition, each student measured and noted the locations of all architectural and engineering elements including, door swings, duplex receptacles, telephone/data outlet, toggle switches, permanently audio/visual equipment, thermostat, fire alarm strobe, fire sprinkler heads and other installed items.
The drawings supplied were intentionally left predominantly blank except for the partition walls and ceiling acoustical tile grid layout. This allowed students to add the building features to their own drawings. Moreover, on the Interior Elevation drawings, students noticed several deviations. These deviations were highlighted and discussed with the mentors. Field conditions was cited as the possible explanations for the deviations.
Lastly, several practical techniques were discussed such as creating architectural symbols for items not listed on the drawing legend and how to handle a tape measure to measure vertically.
ONCE AGAIN NICE WORK EVERYONE!

First Hands-on Activity - The Sphere
Team 8 was broken up into three groups: Team A, Team B and Team C. Each team member worked together for the first time to design a armature that would suspend a 6 inch sphere at least 4 inches off the ground by using up to 15 sheets of 8 1/2" x 11" size paper and Scotch Tape. Each team had 45 minutes to design and construct their structure. As time concluded, each team selected a Team Representative to present their finish product. In addition to presenting how the design evolved and what the intend use of the design would be, each team member had to reveal how decisions among the team were made as well as the challenge the team had to overcome.
NICE WORK EVERYONE!
